innovation assignment seminar II

Adapt or die. Trends inevitably shape the way organisations think and act. What impact is sustainability likely to have on how organisations behave? You may like to think about whether it is the 'next big thing' that innovative organisations are embracing or responding to, or perhaps whether the truly innovative are already doing it.

In the business world, there is a special kind of alchemy that differentiates innovative companies from those where innovation is simply 'business as usual'. While powerful voices in government and commerce are pushing the message of innovation to make economies more globally competitive, results can be elusive. Deloitte can assist companies to design and implement an innovation plan as an intrinsic part of the business plan.
A hundred years ago there were no relationship between business and environment. In the business world today a sustainable business is one that creates profit for its shareholders while protecting the environment and improving the lives of those with whom it interacts.
To remain sustainable, organizations have to maintain and grow their economic, social & environmental capital. The term sustainability refers to providing the best outcomes for human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite hope in future.

Innovative organizations have identified the importance of sustainability in the running of their business. Clearly, there is substantial opportunity to leverage that power to create entirely new industries and reinvent existing ones. In all types of innovation - invention and adoption - the goal of the typical business enterprise is not simply to introduce something new, but to make a profit by doing so. A new product or service becomes profitable when it generates enough sales to cover its development costs and some share of corporate overhead. Profiting from innovation is related to the phenomenon of the product life cycle. Obviously, inventor firms bring products to market for the first time. As a market grows, other companies adopt the innovation and offer it too.
By approving sustainable practices, companies can benefit competitive frame, increase their market shares and stockholders. The growing demand for green products has created major new markets in which innovative eco-entrepreneurs are reaping rewards.

Now many businesses within Australia have taken positive steps to endorse sustainability to other organizations and to the local and domestic markets. Examples of these businesses are Business Shapers, Sustainable Business Strategies, Denis Cooke & Associates, Connell Mott MacDonald and Econow.
These organizations are promoted on the Sustainability in Victoria webs, provide and offer comprehensive services like seminars on climate change in Victoria Australia, which explains the risk management, carbon accounting, maintain marketing and greening the supply chain, to making the relationship between business and environment. These organizations endorse to provide audits on energy protection and management. The business ,who cooperate can now be offered them a rating, up to five stars, based on governance, management principles, resource efficiency, sustainable supply chains, for well being , improving the lives of those with whom it interacts, biodiversity, innovation and integration.

These businesses use innovative means helping environment act friendly. Many promote the work they are providing for the environment which they publish on their webs. An example is Ecosave who donates a tree for every tons of green house gas emission. Also they save 10 kilolitres of water through their projects. They also helping bye donate 5% of their profits to environmental and humanitarian charities to help environment problem.
It has been endorsed by many innovative Org to modified sustainability as important solution to environmental problem as part of their company and business. At the moment every natural system on globe is decomposing and molding. If current corporate practices remain, not one wildlife reserve, wilderness, or indigenous culture will survive the global market economy. In century we live the organization to take important steps to save the environment. Businesses that already aware of the relevance and of the three types of capital; social, economical and environmental, will lead human being to the way for the future if they endorsed to make relationship with environment. It will lead human and wild life to bright future.

Q1/- what are innovation and creativity?
Innovation is the successful exploitation of new ideas. This implies that it is not just the invention of a new idea that we are interested in, but that this idea is actually "brought to market", used, put into practice, exploited in some way, maybe leading to new products, processes, systems, attitudes or services that improve something or add value.
Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being...creativity requires passion and commitment. Out of the creative act is born symbols and myths. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened consciousness–ecstasy.
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but don't act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.
According to the website http://www.jstor.org/pss/256995?cookieSet=1 , creativity as the production of novel and useful ideas in any domain. We define innovation as the successful implementation of creative ideas within an organization. In this view, creativity by individuals and teams is a starting point for innovation; the first is necessary but not sufficient condition for the second. Successful innovation depends on other factors as well, and it can stem not only from creative ideas that originate within an organization but also from ideas that originate elsewhere.
Q2/- what conditions need to exist for innovation to occur?
For innovation to work, we need to create the right conditions for its success, and this means developing a flexible approach with four essential interlocking elements:
1. Governance: All successful innovation involves taking sensible risks. Good and clear governance reduces the risk associated with innovation.
2. Process: disciplined innovation should follow clear process.
3. Capability: Innovation cannot happen without the presence of a strong set of capabilities. These capabilities include leadership, workforce skills, knowledge, resources and research.
4. Culture of collaboration: innovation happens because people are willing to share their experiences.

Q3/- How is Haul innovative?
Haul is an innovative ideas by taking creative thought and valued solutions to exist marketing.
Haul is green, street, design, furniture, art and innovation. haul makes product for enterprises from their billboards, uses both found and recycled materials for installation art pieces, makes furniture for bars and cafes and designs urban lifestyle accessories. In 2008 haul kept 35 tones of billboards, rubber and number plates from landfill. This year the projection is 51 tones.
Q4/ what did you learn from scott kilmartin’s approach to business that you can apply in your workplace? Why?
Scott Kilmartin started a runs haul, the innovative streetwear label making accessories from recycled materials. Turning used vinyl advertising billboards, truck inner tubes and printer blankets into messenger bags, macBook sleeves wallets & bean bags.
According to my work as a community guide in AMES settlement supported from Australian immigration office which dealing with multicultural refugees who new arrived to Australia, I learnt from Scott Kilmartin motivation to be patient when adopting new ideas and track them until be done successfully although obstacles is existing.
Q5/what will you do differently in you workplace if anything? Give an explain why implementation cannot occur?
No enough funding has been allocated for developing programs for community guides A proposal to develop and implement a frontline leadership for case managers has not been good and not controlled.
A proposal to fund this recommendation will be submitted for the 2012 financial year.Corporate strategy, need for integration, change management and strategy implementation.

I have selected the Integrated Humanitarian Strategy Services ( IHSS ) Volunteer Development Officer at AMES. (Sherry Cuthbert).
The IHSS volunteer service provides support to refugees and humanitarian entrants.
The role includes:
recruitment of IHSS volunteers
training of the IHSS volunteers in relation to their volunteer position description
support and Monitoring
recognition of their service
strategies for Volunteer retention
Support to staff who require the service of volunteers
development of IHSS Volunteer Service policy and procedures

The IHSS volunteer Development Officer reports to the IHSS Manager. These is also a supervision component of three other regional IHSS Volunteer Coordinators.
The role also includes relationship development between staff and volunteers, identifying further volunteer opportunities for client support.
Volunteer Development contains elements of Human Resource Management and Risk Management. Legislative requirements, Occupational Health and Safety in particular contribute to policy and procedures.

Volunteer Management parallels Human Resource Management. The procedures for volunteer management are much the same as the procedures for staff management. The difference being that volunteers receive no salary.

As part of the intake process for volunteers, there is a volunteer position description, a police check and referee check.
Training commences upon the clearance of both the referee and police check. Volunteers may select to opt out at any point and all individuals are not suitable to be IHSS volunteers.
Volunteer activities are monitored by staff and the volunteer coordinators. There is a feedback process, which aims to support and guide the volunteers when there are fulfilling their volunteer role.
Opportunities for debriefing are offered and training is throughout the year.

To retain a volunteer a volunteer coordinator must understand what the volunteer hopes to gain from their volunteering experience, as this is the motivator to retain the volunteer.

As a new arrival in Australia, my family was guided by the IHSS case coordinator. I noticed that there were people who would give their time for free to help others. I wondered why people would do something for no pay. I also became a volunteer to help new arrivals settle into their new community. I was interested to know what the role of the volunteer coordinator was , as it was one that I had not seen before.
I learn from that who to get good relationship with different people from different culture and also create nature of experience as Mao Zedong said that “If you want knowledge, you must take part in the practice of changing reality. If you want to know the taste of a pear, you must change the pear by eating it yourself. Day by day following successful senior, experienced people tracks and accumulative experience will increase trust of us to achieve our objectives.

I chose a book entitled CATS composed by Stephen C Lundin with Jimmy Tan as a book review .In summary, it is a globally accepted awareness that right now any individual, company or a country wishing to survive in the twenty first century, must develop the brain seemingly infinite capacity to create and to innovate .to develop these capacities you need excellent guidance and your own application to the task .innovation, but the perspective is personal and the potential results are both personal and organizational. Greater personal innovation can provide a clearer sense of purpose and greater satisfaction in life. Innovation makes life more vital, more interesting and more fun. To create life with meaning and satisfaction; innovation will help you get there. Innovation, personal or corporate-stems from a curiosity to solve a problem or do something better. Curiosity is a trait celebrated in people and cats; it is the very cornerstone of innovation .there is four basic challenges to personal innovation and then nine ways to meet these challenges. The four challenges are universal impediments to innovation. The nine ways are our personal assessment as to what is most important based on our life experience, our studies and our research, the four challenges: doubts and fears, normal (get outside norm to innovate), failure, and leading change. to innovate we must understand and embrace failure and leading change, fundamental to change is leadership, the leadership is more about support than about direction. Each of the four challenges must be met with one or more remedies (called lives),they principle- based solution s and they are called The nine lives of innovation ,overcoming the clutter of life with quietness to allow space for innovation, being with prepared minds, knowing that innovation is not normal: to understand how and why we evolved the way we have is one way to tell the effects of being normal , real provocation ,to escape the clutches of what is normal we can provoke our selves scenarios, objects and real world observations and stimulation from guided interaction with others , promote imaginary provocation to escape the containing power of norm, meeting failure with whimsy is the great way in order to learn ,failing early and well :learning from budding glitches and minimizing the cost of failure ,pounce on changes: humans and their customers and colleagues are effected by change ,within a large organization all innovation is change ,there is a special group of humans we called them leaders, they lead others through change ,those have achieved mastery of innovation and accepted responsibility for guiding, mentoring and supporting other humans seeking innovation .we called those cat wranglers they lead other cats through a labyrinth called change. To sustain a cat beyond nine lives; the thesis is that one can start with any one of the nine lives and live it more fully to increase the level of personal innovation and life satisfaction but go further by building innovation into your life in a disciplined and earn a cat belt .cat belt is fun way to recognize higher achievement in developing the skills and competencies that are at the foundation of innovation .to become a first degree Cat belt you must master one of the lives and in so doing counteract one of the challenges .a second degree master two lives and so on.
